Bathroom Cabinet

There are a number of essential items that every bathroom needs. There is the bath, perhaps a shower over the bath or a separate cubicle; a toilet if there isn’t a separate room for it, and a wash basin.

And then there are the bathroom cabinets
These are absolutely vital in a bathroom. They provide much needed storage space and a place to squirrel away all those things that can make a bathroom look messy if left out.
But there are a number of different styles and types you can have. This is why it is important to plan ahead and figure out which ones you might want to add to your own bathroom.
Open shelved units
These are usually among the cheapest you will find. It should be said though that unless you are exceptionally neat and tidy, you might find these cabinets to be something of a challenge!
This is because everything is still on show. It is perfect for neatly folding towels and displaying them rather than keeping them tucked away, but it also means you will have to find somewhere else to store all those little bits and pieces.
Wall mounted units
These are perfect for a small bathroom where space is at a premium. Narrow depth cabinets can be fitted right along one wall if need be, so they don’t jut out too much into the room.
It also means you can keep the floor space free for other items such as a laundry bin, or a floor standing radiator. Wall mounted units are among the most popular types of bathroom cabinets available.
Floor standing units
The most common example of a floor standing bathroom unit is a vanity unit. This is designed to be fitted around the sink, in order to make use of the space that would otherwise be lost around it.
The vast majority of floor standing units should be fitted to the wall for safety, particularly in the case of a vanity unit. This may be bought together with a sink, but some people create their own and simply buy the sink of their choice to go with it.
Mirrored units
Perfect for making a small bathroom look bigger, mirrored units look the part when they are mounted on the wall. They also provide somewhere for men to shave, and women to apply their make up.
In some cases you may find that mirrored cabinets contain a lockable section. This is designed to hold medicines and tablets securely, so that no one can get to them without having the key. More usually it prevents children from gaining access to the unit.
Over toilet units
These are a very good idea if you have a tiny bathroom and you are struggling to fit in all the essentials. The unit stands on poles or legs so that it straddles the cistern, and it provides shelves or cupboards above the toilet.
It is equally possible to simply mount a standard bathroom wall cabinet above the toilet however. The main consideration should be that you won’t bang your head when using the loo.
What materials are used for making bathroom cabinets?
A wide range of materials is available for creating bathroom cabinets. Which one you choose will largely depend on two things – the budget you have to spend and the kind of look you want to create. The cheapest option is undoubtedly those that are made from chipboard and covered in a thin laminate. These have the advantage of you being able to wipe them clean if needed, but if moisture gets into the seams it can blow the chipboard.
Metal cabinets can look very sleek and are a good choice if you want to go for a more modern look. Similarly aluminium can offer similar advantages, and it is particularly good at fending off the effects of what can be a damp atmosphere. Once again, both of these options are easy to wipe and keep looking good.
With fitted units, you can get any number of different door finishes to make them look good. This is a good way to get the look of an expensive bathroom without the expense. Simple chipboard cabinet frames are perfect for your needs, and you can then choose the door style to fit the frame. Some stores specialise in offering a wide range of door finishes.
The other advantage of this option is that you can change just the doors to get a brand new look for a low price at a later date if you wish. And there are plenty to choose from – you could go for wood effect or solid wood, or perhaps a lacquered finish or something with a high gloss. Lacquered and high gloss finishes often come in a range of colours too, so you can really brighten up your bathroom quite easily.
How do I choose what works best for my bathroom?
The trick is to plan out your space first. Draw a scale plan of the room and allow for all fixtures and fittings. Put the bath, basin and toilet in place and work out what room you are left with.
How many cabinets do you think you will need? How many items do you have that need to be stored in the bathroom? Will you need a medicine cabinet? Ask yourself as many question as necessary to get to the answers you need. You will soon work out what type of cabinets will fit your budget, and indeed how many you need as well.
You may decide to go for more expensive cabinets and have less of them. Or alternatively go for a whole wall of cheaper ones if you really need the storage space. Whatever you choose to do, it is good to know that you have a wide choice of cabinets and finishes to select from.
In a matter of days, you could end up with the good looking, neat and tidy bathroom you have always wanted.
